Using BoltWX on a sea kayaking trip
How to get weather, tide, wind and wave forecasts when you don’t have internet access
A multi-day sea kayaking trip can take a lot of preparation, which doesn’t stop when you hit the water. Coastal winds and ocean swells can be fickle, making it important to stay on top of conditions. A BoltWX user recently shared with us their experience using the new kayaking feature on week-long trip in British Columbia’s beautiful Clayoquot Sound, with some great examples of how off-grid forecasts helped them with mid-trip planning.
Pre-Trip Setup and Testing
The group planned to launch from Tofino to establish a base camp on Flores Island and explore the surrounding area. Before leaving Tofino's cell service, they reviewed the official marine forecasts for the region to get one last look at the weather for the week ahead. While the area offers stunning island archipelagos and rich marine life, coastal weather systems off the Pacific can shift rapidly. Afternoon winds and ocean swells can quickly turn a calm crossing into a demanding one.
To make sure everything was working before they hit the water, the group sent a test message via standard SMS to check that their BoltWX account was active. This also gave them the opportunity to try out the BoltWX iPhone Shortcut.
The Shortcuts app comes with all iPhones and is an easy way to convert BoltWX’s abbreviated weather forecasts into a visual forecast with graphs and tables. It mirrors the experience of a standard online weather app, without requiring an internet connection, making the info much easier to interpret.
On The Water - Spot Forecasting
Deep in the Sound and away from any cell towers, they relied entirely on their InReach satellite messenger and the satellite capabilities of an iPhone 16 Pro to get forecasts from BoltWX when making plans for the day.
Rather than depending on a broad regional forecast, they used BoltWX's kayaking-specific commands. The KAYAK keyword returns weather, tides, winds and waves across three messages, including the Canadian HRDPS 1km resolution model, which is the best available in this area.
The tide, wind and wave forecasts particularly helped on the day they traversed the outer coast of Flores Island, which is very exposed and offers few opportunities to land. Having an up-to-date forecast gave the group the confidence to take this route and explore the wild coastal side of Flores, rather than taking the more sheltered route past McKay Island.
Their itinerary also involved exploring various exposed points and channels, where local wind effects vary significantly. To see what the wind and wave conditions might be like in those areas, they copied GPS coordinates for those points from offline mapping apps like Gaia GPS and pasted them into the BoltWX messages, rather than using the GPS location of their device. This gave them the weather details for that localized area, which helped with planning their day trips.
You don't need to be physically at a location to check its conditions. In offline navigation apps like Gaia GPS or CalTopo, tap any headland, channel, or campsite along your route, copy the coordinates and paste them into your message (e.g. #ACCESSCODE# KAYAK (lat, lon)). BoltWX will return localized high-resolution winds, tides, and waves for that exact spot before you commit to the crossing.
The Return to Tofino
For the last day of the trip, the group needed to break camp on Flores Island and paddle back to the launch site in Tofino.
Checking the forecast on their final evening, the KAYAK update indicated that winds were expected to increase significantly mid-morning. Armed with this advance notice, they made the decision to wake up early, break camp immediately and get underway hours earlier than originally planned.
By shifting their timeline, they completed the most exposed crossings before the weather system arrived. Avoiding the afternoon gusts made the return trip much more manageable and gave the less experienced paddlers in their group a better safety margin.
